An introduction to two-way networks

We provide a high level overview of the information theoretic study of two-way networks. We start by introducing the capacity / capacity region of a channel / network, respectively. While we know the capacity of one-way point-to-point channels where there is one source and one destination, we do not know that of a two-way channel, where two nodes wish to exchange messages. In two-way networks nodes are able to “adapt’’ or “interact’’ in the sense that the next channel inputs may be a function of the past received signals at a particular node. How to best adapt is key to two-way communication problems, rendering them complex and challenging. We point out some of the difficulties, and successes in the quest for the capacity of two-way networks.
